moving preps
Wife and I decided to get out of Cali while the gettin is good. We have our house under contract and also are purchasing a much more affordable place with land in the boonies. We need to move and were wondering if anyone has some good experience/advice on making long moves and protecting your preps in the process.
We are getting a service to move the bulk of furniture and stuff. Most of our food preps and other goodies can go with that. There are other items that we can't really leave with the movers - and need to move ourselves. This would be protection and lots of heavy metal items. This is really proving to be a conundrum on how to move this stuff since its valuable and heavy. I am concerned about making a trip across country with a trunk packed full of weapons, and even more concerned about how to move PM's and ammo. Any ideas? |
Re: moving preps
Are you driving straight through? This makes a HUGE difference.
If you can load a uhaul with your guns ammo first, then all your non scary stuff, and drive straight through you should be fine. |
Re: moving preps
u haul truck, drive in shifts to new location.

Re: moving preps
I'd agree....U-haul, truck or enclosed trailer if you don't have enough leftover from the moving van to justify a truck ( and your vehicle will handle it. )....load the "good stuff" toward the front, locked securely in trunks, jobsite box like this:
http://www.knaack.com/images/temp/1010_2231_main.jpg or homebuilt wood crates that you have to take a zillion screws out of to open..... Then pack a bunch of other stuff in toward the back door. There is a federal law that allows you to transport weapons thru any State as long as you are traveling thru and not stopping other than for reasons pertaining to your travel ( gas, food, sleep )...but the weapons need to be unloaded, ammo separate, etc... Congrats on voting with your feet about CommieFornia, by the way. |

Re: moving preps
We rented a 26-foot Penske truck for a weekend when we bailed out of metro Atlanta. My FIL is a Penske driver, so we got a great discount on the rental, and he drove the truck. Family helped us load and unload the truck. Stuff that was not suitable for the truck, such as firearms, came with us in our SUV. Total expense for the truck, including diesel fuel, was about $350.

Re: moving preps
pack the guns in bedding ,underneath other items or as Andy said,in crates. the PM, i would split up between the truck and your car,If you have a lot of Silver, convert it to Gold before you go, remember, Silver is for buying, and Gold is for STORING ,you can roll it back over whenever you get to your destination. ammo,i would just put inside boxes.None of what you are doing is illegal.I would worry more about thieves than LEOs.Avoid stopping for the night in or near large cities, avoid really small remote motels as well. cities with populations between 1000-3000 are the least nosey and the safest.also dont wait until 2am to stop , get up early and rest early.Use Interstates as much as possible,LEOs are looking for speeders mostly there.they wont give the Uhaul much of a look. The US Border patrol may look at you in SoCal and the Southwest (had it happen once leaving Phoenix in a Uhaul) once into the interior of the country thats over.Ive done this twice and its a long haul (once from IL to AZ, and another time from AZ to MI) get rest, stay safe and good luck!
